The contribution of O.V. Alagesan
for the development of Tamil Nadu was recalled by various
speakers at his centenary celebrations on 2nd December 2011.
Recalling his association with the
Congress leader, Governor K. Rosaiah said that as a student
he met Alagesan and requested him to provide railway link
to a place in Andhra Pradesh.
Alagesan, who was the Deputy Railway
Minister, told him that the Ministry was keen to strengthen
the existing railway network and new projects would be taken
up later.
At a very early age, Alagesan joined
hands with national leaders in the mission to get freedom
for the country.
Centenary
The centenary celebrations in memory of the great leaders
of the country were not only to recall their heroic deeds,
but also to carry the message to the youth to emulate them,
Mr. Rosaiah said.
G.K. Vasan, Union Minister of Shipping, said Alagesan was
instrumental in setting up the Integral Coach Factory at
Perambur. The Madras Fertiliser's unit at Manali and the
Atomic power station at Kalpakkam.
Guidance
Jayanthi Natarajan, Union Minister of Environment and Forests,
who is also the grandniece of Alagesan, said when she was
elected Member of Parliament for the first time, Alagesan
and his family members blessed her.
His guidance helped her learn how
to be a good Parliamentarian.
A. Vamanan, son of Alagesan who
is also the convener of the programme, B.S. Gnanadesikan,
president, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, and Sarojini Varadappan,
were among those who spoke.
The Governor released a souvenir.
The first copy was received by Mr. Vasan.
